January showers bring.....babies!
It's been a long time since I went to a baby shower. Actually I think the last one I went to was my own when I was pregnant with my son (who's 18 months old now), but before that it was a while because I think all my friends are done having babies and are now starting to have grandbabies (yikes!).
I had fun putting together some pink things for my friends soon-to-be-born granddaughter. I bought a set of onesies and appliqued some simple things on them and put together these burp rags with some flannel and fabric I had. So really the only cost was the onesies because I had everything else on hand. Nice.
The pink print is one of Anna Griffin's designs and I love this sweet shade of pink. It's super soft too. It only took me a few minutes to whip these burp rags together since I just stacked the fabrics and used my rotary cutter then serged the edges (each one has flannel on one side and the pink woven fabric on the other).
Here's the pattern I use. When I cut it out I ironed some heavy duty interfacing on it and I just keep it up in a clip hanging on a nail by my cutting table. I can't count how many times I've made burp rags with it and it makes a much appreciated gift (pretty yet practical). It's especially great when you're short on time but want to bring something handmade. Fun!

I think your baby shower gift is beautiful. I think you should sell them. That would be awesome! I love giving something special and not store bought for a baby shower gift. I sometimes make a baby bracelet, but I feel like I have to give something more. I love stopping here to read your blog. You are too funny. You make want to sew, but I can not do more thing or we will have to buy a bigger house. LOL!

Thanks for the pattern; great idea for a gift. There's nothing like homemade!

thanks for the dimension info on these, i always thought they were so cute! now all i need is a $2000 serger... haha! could i just use like a zig-zag stitch close to the edge? wouldnt be as nice as a serged seam, but i could put some run-stop around the tiny exposed edge i suppose.

Too cute and I love the fabric! What a great baby gift, I have a friend who makes burp cloths like that and I have been the recipient of several with my last two babies. I love them, they are practical and pretty, especially nice when you are in public. At least you have something pretty thrown over your shoulder : )

Krysten,
I'd like a $2000 dollar serger too! Ha! I'm not sure if zig-zagging would work but you can definitly put the right sides together and stitch around it but leave a little opening (about 3") to turn it right-side out (then use a little stitch to shut the opening). Savvy?

yeah, that's true! i was only thinking of it being one layer, but it is actually two, so that would totally be what i would want to do... i've got lots of seaming practice from all the French Seams i did in that knit project bag i did. i am very proud of my non-raw-edge seams on the inside of my work.
unfortunately, no one i really know is having any babies? the heck? maybe i'll donate to the hospital or something....

Those are adorable - both the burp cloths and the onesies! I've been wanting to experiment with applique's, so I might add this to the list of project ideas for when I'm cleared from bedrest!!!

Too cute! I love the little onesies with the appliques. Any chance you'd do a tutorial on how to applique a t-shirt? I'd love to try it. :)
